Recycle Where? is a collaboration amongst local governmental agencies including San Francisco Department of the Environment, StopWaste.Org (Alameda County Waste Management Authority), Contra Costa County, City of San Jose and City of Palo Alto. Recycle Where? reduces waste by providing accurate information about recycling, reuse, and proper disposal options for residents and businesses without regard to traditional municipal boundaries.
To meet California waste diversion requirements, many local environmental agencies maintain databases of recycling, reuse and waste disposal options nearly identical in structure and function. As aging software systems required attention, a number of agencies in the San Francisco Bay Area saw an opportunity to share limited budgets to consolidate systems, save staff time, and vastly improve citizen experience.
1. Conceived a universal system that would allow a regional approach to maintaining recycling, reuse and disposal data
2. Facilitated all group communications and convenings; secured project MOUs and funding from each participating agency
3. Solicited vendors via an RFP process and managed the software development process, from discovery to implementation
Released open source software solution with an open data model that consolidated data management needs, saved staff time and increased citizen access to important data
