Our 5th Anniversary! A Civic Design Panel, Fair & Party

Get your tickets!

Join CivicMakers for an insightful and celebratory meetup of civic designers who are growing a movement to support more responsive, human-centered public services. We’ll start with an interactive panel discussion featuring public sector leaders at the forefront of civic design, followed by a party and Civic Design Fair to celebrate the 5 year anniversary of CivicMakers’ first civic meetup! Drinks and snacks are on us 🙂

Since we began hosting convenings for the civic innovation space, we’ve been inspired by how many people we’ve met who share our vision of a world where everyone has the tools necessary to co-create solutions to their shared challenges. A steadily growing movement of public servants, politicians, nonprofit leaders, and civic entrepreneurs are asking the same question: how might we modernize public services by applying design methodologies that have proven successful in the tech sector?

Our panel discussion will explore what civic design looks like in practice and how leaders inside and outside government are building capacity for human-centered methodologies like service design, agile development and digital engagement. You’ll hear from a diverse set of individuals, representing public agencies and nonprofits, on the challenges and opportunities inherent in collaborative civic design, and have the opportunity to mingle with our established Bay Area community of civic designers and other similarly-minded folks.

We are honored to be joined by these esteemed panelists:

  • Angelica “Angie” Quirarte – Assistant Secretary for Digital Engagement, CA GovOps; Executive Director & Founder, NxtGov
  • Kevin Williams – Director of Learning, FUSE Corps
  • Deborah Acosta – Founder & CEO, WeAccel; Chief Innovation Officer (former), City of San Leandro
  • Shalini Agrawal – Founder, Pathways to Equity; Associate Professor, California College of the Arts
  • Lawrence Grodeska (moderator) – Co-founder & CEO, CivicMakers

The Civic Design Fair will feature some of our favorite artists and designers using their talent and creativity to encourage everything from civic participation to civil discourse:

  • Molly McLeod – artist and designer creating civic games, documentary films, adult summer camps, and public art projects
  • Kaitlin Strange – planner and artists whose public art and one-line illustrations depict civic life of all sorts
  • Steve Pepple – designer and technologist working at the intersection of people, data, and civic life
